Surjit Patar is one of the most iconic poets Punjab has seen. His writings have been a perennial source of wisdom for the readers for more than 4 decades now.
Perhaps it is the intelligibility of his words amalgamated with his great philosophical depth that has made Patar timeless.
He seems to be living the adage, “An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.”
Another reason why Patar is highly regarded among intellectuals is that his works cover the entire spectrum of emotions. He can be intimidatingly philosophical and heartbreakingly tearful in one part and full of immutable hope in the next.
Patar is well known for several of his works such as Hawa Vich Likhe Harf (Words written in the Air), Patjhar Di Pazeb (Anklet of Autumn), Hanere Vich Sulagdi Varnmala (Words Smouldering in the Dark), Birkh Arz Kare(Thus Spoke the Tree), Lafzaan Di Dargah (Shrine of Words), Surzameen (Music Land).
I picked up Patar for the very first time when I heard the news of him returning his Padma Shri Award (the 4th highest Civilian Award in India) due to the callous attitude of the Indian government towards the protesting farmers.
And, I must tell you, I’m literally blown away by the profundity of his words and at the same time feeling guilty for being oblivious to his works for so long.
To show my respect for this legendary poet, here I’ve curated a list of 15 of his hard-hitting lines that talk about Life, Love, and everything in between.
