Book Review: Such is HER Life
Author: Reecha Agarwal Goyal
Publisher: FingerPrint!
Can you imagine a world without women?
A child without a mother?
Anyone?
Well, no one can.
Still, we live in a society that has been robbing women of their identity since time immemorial. Let us understand this through a quote from this book.
You know her as a mother, daughter, sister, wife, daughter in law but seldom as a woman, and may be never as a human.
The book “Such is HER Life” is a collection of musings on the life of a woman, covering her journey from being a fetus to an elderly lady.
The book highlights her struggle, which begins as a fetus and continues till her last breath. It also puts light on the stereotypical rules “bestowed” upon her by the society.
The book brings to the fore, how her clothes and virginity decide her character, how her “not allowed to do” list is bigger than her “allowed to do list”, how there is a predetermined age for her to “settling down”, how she is expected to feed the family and carry out household chores even if she is a working professional.
The list doesn’t end here. After marriage, she has to wear symbols to convey that she is married whereas nothing changes in her husband’s life.
Was she the only one who got married?
The book is a tight slap on the so-called self-proclaimed equality flag-bearers who use terms like “she is my son”. The identity crisis is so real that even her praise is not complete without reference to a son.
My Review:
I am really impressed by the author Reecha Agarwal Goyal. Her observation skills and research for this book is highly commendable. She has covered a lot of real-life problems a common woman faces in her life.
This is that book that will make you realize that when it comes to teaching a lesson, “Size of the book doesn’t matter.” You can finish reading this book in about 2 hours but it has the ability to create an impact that could last a lifetime. It will not only change your perspective towards women but also will leave you gasping to thank the women around you.
The moment I finished reading this book, I went to my mom’s room, hugged her, and started crying. She kept asking what had happened but I couldn’t explain. Thereafter, we went to a Punjabi movie ( she likes them ). When I put my hand in the popcorn bucket, I realized it was empty. For the first time, I saw a little girl in her. This “woman” who didn’t eat a single chapati without me, had finished the whole bucket of popcorn. It brought a smile on my face.
Hats off to Reecha Agarwal Goyal for writing this remarkable book. I hope, this book serves the purpose of creating a more balanced society, free from male chauvinism.
