Bhagat Singh's Letter To Jaidev For Books

Bhagat Singh was an ardent reader. The magnitude of his love for books can be extrapolated from the fact that he was reading a book even after being consciously aware that he is about to be hanged in a few hours.

Bhagat’s lawyer Pran Mehta came to meet him on 23rd March 1931, just a few hours before his hanging. Singh welcomed Mehta with a warm smile and enquired if he had brought Vladimir Lenin’s book, “State and Revolution”.

Being well aware that he has limited time with him, Bhagat started reading the book as soon as he received it.

It’s said that when Bhagat was called upon to mount the scaffold, he was reading this book by Lenin. He said the following words and continued his reading,

“Wait a while.
A revolutionary is talking to another revolutionary”

After a few moments, Bhagat tossed the book towards the ceiling and said “LET US GO

MY DEAR JAIDEV,
Please take the following books in my name from Dwarkadas Library and send them through Kulvir on Sunday:

  1. Militarism (Kari Liebknecht) Why Men Fight (B. Russel)
  2. Soviets at Work Collapse of the Second International
  3. Left-Wing Communism Mutual Aid (Prince Kropotkin)
  4. Fields, Factories and Workshops Civil War in France (Marx)
  5. Land Revolution in Russia Spy (Upton Sinclair)

Please send one more book from Punjab Public Library: Historical Materialism (Bukharin). Also, please find out from the librarian if some books have been sent to Borstal Jail. They are facing a terrible famine of books. They had sent a list of books through Sukhdev’s brother Jaidev.

They have not received any book till now. If they have no list, please ask Lala Firoz Chand to send some interesting books of his choice. The books must reach them before I go there this Sunday. This work is a must. Please keep this in mind.

Also, send Punjab Peasants in Prosperity and Debt by Darling and 2 or 3 books of this type for Dr Alam. Hope you will excuse me for this trouble. I promise I will not trouble you in future. Please remember me to all my friends and convey my respect to Lajjawati. I am sure if Dutt’s sister came she will not forget to see me.

With regards
Bhagat Singh
