I often say that if writing is art then Bukowski is one of the best artists the world has seen. I say so because I’m yet to find a better craftsman of sentences than Bukowski. The depth he was able to convey in 2 sentences is often far more than what you can get from reading an entire book.
To corroborate my words let’s refer to a poem from the book Love is a Dog from Hell where Bukowski talks about loneliness. A stubborn, strangulating loneliness that never seems to go away. A loneliness that takes away all the punctuations we need to make sense of our life.
It’s like your lungs are in the best shape, working at the best of their capacity but you still feel breathless. Or it’s like being in a room full of people and still feeling intimidatingly lonely.

There is a loneliness in this world so great
that you can see it in the slow movement of
the hands of a clock.
people so tired
mutilated
either by love or no love.
people just are not good to each other
one on one.
the rich are not good to the rich
the poor are not good to the poor.
we are afraid.
our educational system tells us
that we can all be
big-ass winners.
it hasn’t told us
about the gutters
or the suicides.
or the terror of one person
aching in one place
alone
untouched
unspoken to
watering a plant.
