An Open Letter to a Star Friend ― Celebrating Her PhD

An Open Letter to a Star Friend Celebrating Their PhD

My Dearest Friend,

I trust this message finds you well amidst the triumphant glow of your recent achievement—A Doctorate that is not only well-deserved but also a testament to your unwavering dedication and intellectual prowess.

Recalling our shared academic journey, it was unmistakably clear that you were destined for remarkable heights. I remember your commitment to learning, a trait that set you apart.

Also, Like me, you were a true home lover, someone who cherished the weekends spent in the cozy embrace of family and home, returning from the hostel on Fridays and venturing forth again on Mondays, refreshed and ready to conquer the academic world.

Your ability to wield words was not just impressive; it was a masterful demonstration of linguistic artistry, and it never failed to leave an indelible mark on me.

While I recall those moments when imposter syndrome dared to intrude upon your thoughts, I’m reminded of a rather astute observation by Charles Bukowski, a writer you’ve never been particularly fond of. He once remarked,

“The problem with the world is that intelligent people are full of doubts, while fools are full of confidence.”

The irony, of course, lies in the fact that this quote, despite your disapproval of Bukowski, resonates with the universal human experience.

In hindsight, your journey, marked by introspection and occasional doubt, mirrors the path of genius. Those doubts, my friend, are the crucible in which your intellect has been refined and honed to its current brilliance. They bear witness to your humility and your relentless pursuit of excellence, which has brought you to this pinnacle of achievement.

Reflect on Pluto’s resilience: Despite its elongated orbit, it remained true to its path. Similarly, your journey, though challenging, is uniquely yours. Embrace your pace, stand resilient against judgments, and trust that as you traverse your individual orbit of growth, the brilliance within you will inevitably come to light.

I must admit that your influence catalyzed my own foray into the realm of writing. While I had been quietly nurturing my passion for writing, it was your mastery of the written word, your erudition, and your unwavering commitment to your craft that inspired me to explore the boundless possibilities of expression through writing. Your profound impact emboldened me to embrace writing as a means of self-expression and self-discovery, and for that, I’m truly grateful.

Coming back, I’m elated to hear that you’ve embarked on a journey in the industry following your doctorate. Your talents and your intellect are boundless, and I have no doubt that you will leave an indelible mark in your new domain. The world outside academia is about to witness the brilliance that I, as your friend, have long known and admired.

As you enter this new phase of your career, take a moment to celebrate not just your past achievements but the bright path that lies ahead. I am confident that the future holds limitless promise for you, and I eagerly anticipate the myriad of accomplishments that await you on your continuing ascent toward greatness.

On a professional note, I would like to mention that I have some expertise in the field of rural water supply owing to my profession, and so I am immensely interested in discussing your research on autonomous water supply systems. Your insights in this area would be invaluable, and I believe our exchange of ideas could be profoundly enriching.

Now, my friend, as a fellow lover of Punjabi songs, I can’t help but wonder: What’s on your Punjabi playlist these days?

I’m sure there are some gems you’ve discovered that I need to add to my own collection. Do share your musical discoveries, and let’s keep the rhythm of our friendship alive through the melodies we both adore.

Here’s to you, your remarkable journey, and our shared love for Punjabi music! May the days ahead shine as brightly as your intellect, and may you continue to inspire all fortunate enough to know you with your undeniable talent.

With unwavering confidence, immense admiration, and a desire for some Punjabi beats,

Jasmeet

(P.S. I would absolutely love to grab a coffee together someday and engage in discussions on the profundities of life and explore the potential for co-authoring a book. Please do let me know when you’re in town; it would be a truly enriching experience for me. )
