When it comes to the Punjabi Music Industry, it’s famous around the globe for its loud music and flamboyant videos. In such an ostentatious domain, there are singers and lyricists who have succeeded in creating a parallel world that is not only entertaining but also occasionally thought-provoking.
Thought-provoking because some of these songs literally force us to zoom out from the narrow mindset of the 9 to 5 world and direct our attention towards the hollowness of the lives we are living.
So today, we have come up with a list of these soul-soothing Punjabi songs that talk about the various less-discussed aspects of human existence. The list has been carefully curated to include some of the most hard-hitting Punjabi songs of all time.
Here We Go:
#1: Dishaheen by Bir Singh
Assi Dishaheen, Naadan Parinde
Assi Dishaheen Nadaan Parinde written and sung by Bir Singh from the movie Sarvann depicts the situation of every intellectual. Every intellectual’s life, at least once comes to an impasse where one has no clue about what to do next.
It’s about the life of an individual who Introspects. Because only those who introspect can know “what they were” and “what they have become.”
In the words of Bir Singh,
“Sheeshe vich khud nu tak ke dil rove
Ki ton ki ban gaye ae hazam na hove”
#2: Panchi Hojavan by Jasleen Royal
Jee chaahe panchi ho jawan
Udda javan gaanda javan
This song by Jasleen Royal is based on a poem by legendary Indian poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi .
The song talks about how sometimes we all desperately need an escape from the utterly meaningless mechanical lives we all are living.
It also makes us realize how we can do so much in our lives but due to societal or other traps, we end up giving up on our own dreams and start living the life that is acceptable according to societal standards.
The voice, the guitar, everything about this song is simply awesome. And, I can undoubtedly say, it definitely offers a temporary escape.
#3: Chal Buleya by Ali Zafar
Padh Padh Ilm Te Faazil Hoyon, Mann Apne Nu Padheya Ee Naahi
Bhaj Bhaj Wadna Ay Mandir Maseeti, Mann Apne Vich Wadeya Ee Nahi
This song by Ali Zafar is based on a Kalam by Baba Bulleh Shah ji. The essence of Baba Bulleh Shah’s teaching was that God is beyond rituals, customs, and shrines. An idea that resonates with most of the intellectuals of the modern era.
The words quoted above mean,
“You read to become all knowledgeable, But you never read yourself
You run to enter temples and mosques, But you never entered your own heart”
The words can literally help you in rediscovering your true self which in turn would help you in identifying what exactly you want from your life.
Ali with his soul-penetrating voice has undoubtedly done complete justice to the Kalam.
#4: Chakkar Anokhe by Manpreet
Eh chakkar anokhe ne chalde hi rehne
This song sung by Manpreet and written by Harmanjeet is literally the antidote to all the chaos out there. It’s based on a poem from the book Ranitatt by Harmanjeet. It’s one of the best Punjabi books I’ve ever read.
The poem was converted into a song to pay the last tribute to the legendary Indian actor, Irfan Khan.
For a while, this song takes away our attention from the hustle and bustle of the meaningless lives we all have trapped ourselves into and forces us to focus on the broader perspective of life.
It goes without saying that Harmanjeet is one of the best Punjabi writers of the contemporary era.
The takeaway from this song is clear, the circle of life goes on, with you or without you.

#5: Changa Ae by Bir Singh
Main soch reha eh phul mehboob nu de aavan
Tere kadmaa ‘ch chadhaun naalo te changa ae
It’s said that “Words, sometimes, can set you free”. And Bir Singh’s words are literally setting people free. In fact, Bir Singh with his words has been rewiring wrongly wired brains for quite some time now.
Changa Ae by him is just another testimony to the phenomenal work he has been doing.
#6: Roohafza by Sharry Mann
Meri rooh nu bachpan wala
Roohafza na miley
This song from Sharry Mann highlights one of the most ubiquitous realizations among the adults that, “childhood is the most precious phase of human life“
Though one might argue that every phase of life has its own charm, to which I completely agree. But at the same time, none can deny the fact that there is something special about childhood that remains elusive from the other phases. In the words of Roald Dahl,
“Grown ups are complicated creatures, full of quirks and secrets”
The most appealing line for me was,
“O bachpan kar gya jhatti
Oye Rabba kithe jaan fassa ti”
Oye Rabba kithe jaan fassa ti is literally the only “constant” of adult life.

#7: The Lost Life Song by A-Kay
Hun Lakhan Da V Reha Na Svaad Mitro,
Jo Ikk Sikke Nal Aunda Si
This song from A-Kay hits differently. It fits perfectly in every adult’s life.
The above-quoted lines mean that even lakhs of rupees cannot replace the happiness that came from a single coin during childhood.
Time is really one of the most cunning merchants, it takes away our childhood by playing with our greed for adulthood.
The lesson though is loud and clear, “Live in the Moment”.
#8: Ustat by Manpreet
Rookha manukha Te Khukha di Ustat
Khede di baithak Ch Dukha di Ustat
This song, again sung by Manpreet and written by Harmanjeet teaches us how important in life it is, to let go of who others think we are supposed to be.
The video of this song can undoubtedly transform the way you look at your imperfections. I would not be surprised if you start embracing your imperfections after watching this.
The first time, I saw the video, it reminded me of the words of Satinder Sartaaj in the song Ibadat,
“Jekar Mushkila Awan Tere Raste Tu Doli Na,
Kai Vari Museebat Hi Dukha Da Hal Bandi Eh”
The message from the video is loud and clear, “The world has room for everyone”.
It’s up to the protagonist, they can either accept society’s definition of them or muster some courage and catalog their own definition of them.
